The Sakuntala Park dates back to the 19th century, and its name is derived from Indian 5th century literature. The poet Kalidasa wrote the epic of Sakuntala. Sakuntala was a girl who lived in harmony with nature and natural processes. Besides the eponymous statue, in the park visitors can see busts of people who had a major role in the cultural life of the city of Osijek in the 19th century – musicians Franjo Kuhač and Pajo Kolarić, and painters Hugo Conrad von Hötzendorf and... Adolf Waldinger. Two sphinx statues located at the park entrance which have a symbolic role as guardians are certainly interesting.
